Cancel Your Application
Understand the cancellation process, implications, and alternatives for your travel authorization.
Understanding Application Cancellation
There are various reasons why a traveler might consider canceling their Electronic Travel Authorization application. Travel plans change, personal circumstances evolve, and sometimes an authorization is no longer needed. Understanding the cancellation process, its implications, and the available alternatives helps you make an informed decision about how to proceed.
Before initiating a cancellation, it is important to consider whether cancellation is truly necessary or whether an alternative approach might better serve your needs. In many cases, keeping an approved authorization active — even if your immediate travel plans have changed — offers advantages for potential future travel within the validity period.
When Cancellation May Be Appropriate
Before You Cancel: Alternatives to Consider
An approved ESTA has no negative impact on your travel record, even if you never use it. If your travel plans have simply been postponed rather than permanently abandoned, keeping your authorization active allows you to travel to the United States at any point during the remaining validity period without needing to reapply. There are no ongoing costs or obligations associated with maintaining an approved authorization.
If your concern is about outdated travel details on your application — such as a changed hotel address or updated contact information — these can typically be modified on your existing authorization without cancellation. Only changes to core personal details like your name, passport number, or citizenship require a new application.
The Cancellation Process
To initiate the cancellation of your travel authorization, you will need your application reference number and the passport details associated with your application. The cancellation process involves verifying your identity, confirming your intention to cancel, and processing the revocation of your authorization.
Once a cancellation is processed, your authorization is permanently revoked and cannot be reinstated. If you decide to travel to the United States in the future, you will need to submit a completely new application and go through the full screening process again. This is why we strongly recommend carefully considering whether cancellation is truly necessary before proceeding.
Impact of Cancellation
Canceling your Electronic Travel Authorization has several implications you should be aware of. Your authorization will be immediately invalidated, meaning you cannot use it for travel to the United States. Any future travel will require a new application with the associated fee. Cancellation does not affect your eligibility for future applications — you can apply again at any time.
Regarding refunds, our refund policy applies to cancellation requests. The availability and amount of any refund depends on the timing of your cancellation request relative to your application submission date and the processing status of your application. Please review our Refund Policy page for complete details on refund eligibility.
Cancellation Is Permanent
Once processed, a cancellation cannot be reversed. Consider all alternatives before proceeding and contact our support team if you need guidance on the best course of action for your specific situation.
