Processing Times

Get clear insights into how long your ESTA application may take and how to plan your travel with confidence.

How ESTA Processing Works

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is designed to deliver fast decisions for eligible travelers. Unlike traditional visa processes that may take weeks or even months, ESTA uses automated systems to review applications quickly and efficiently.

In most cases, applicants receive a response almost immediately after submission. However, some applications may require additional checks, which can extend processing time. For this reason, travelers are strongly encouraged to apply well before their departure date to avoid any last-minute complications.

Typical Processing Time

Most ESTA applications are processed within minutes. If further review is required, decisions are typically made within 72 hours.

What Affects Processing Time?

Processing speed can vary depending on several factors. Understanding these can help you avoid delays and improve your chances of faster approval.

Accurate and complete personal information submission
System demand and application volume at submission time
Previous travel history and immigration records
Security screening results from background checks
Matching passport details with application data
Peak vs non-peak application submission periods

Best Time to Apply

Although ESTA is built for fast approvals, applying in advance is always the safest approach. The official recommendation is to apply at least 72 hours before travel.

For added security and peace of mind, consider applying weeks or even months ahead. Early submission allows time to resolve any issues that may arise during processing.

Once approved, your ESTA remains valid for two years or until your passport expires. Applying early does not reduce this validity period, making it a risk-free decision.

Important Tip

Avoid applying at the last minute. Unexpected delays or required corrections could impact your travel plans if you don’t allow enough processing time.

Track Your Application Status

After submitting your ESTA application, you can track its progress anytime using your reference number. The system provides real-time updates so you always know your application status.

There are three possible outcomes:

Approved: Your application is accepted and you are authorized to travel.
Pending: Your application is under review and requires additional processing time.
Not Authorized: Your ESTA request has been declined. You may need to apply for a visa instead.

If your application remains pending longer than expected, review your submitted information carefully. In some situations, submitting a corrected application may help resolve delays faster.
