ESTA Eligibility Requirements
Find out whether you qualify for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization and what you need before applying.
Who Can Apply for ESTA?
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization is exclusively available to citizens and nationals of countries that participate in the United States Visa Waiver Program (VWP). If your country of citizenship is listed among VWP member nations, you can apply for an ESTA instead of obtaining a traditional nonimmigrant visa for short-term visits.
To qualify, you must hold a valid e-Passport (a machine-readable passport with an embedded electronic chip), intend to stay in the United States for no more than 90 days, and travel for tourism, short-term business, or transit purposes. Employment, academic enrollment, journalism assignments, and stays exceeding 90 days require a standard visa.
Visa Waiver Program Countries
Citizens of the following countries are eligible to apply for travel authorization through the ESTA system:
Passport Requirements
Your passport must meet specific criteria to be accepted with an ESTA application:
- Your passport must be an e-Passport containing a digital chip with biometric data.
- The passport must be valid for the entire duration of your intended stay in the United States.
- Machine-readable zones must be clearly legible without damage or obstruction.
- The passport must be issued by a Visa Waiver Program participating country.
Travel Purpose Eligibility
The ESTA system covers specific types of travel to the United States. Understanding which category your trip falls under ensures you apply through the correct channel.
Eligible Purposes
- • Vacations, sightseeing, and recreational travel
- • Attending business conferences or meetings
- • Short-term professional consultations
- • Transit through a US airport to another destination
- • Visiting family or friends for brief periods
- • Receiving medical treatment (short-term)
Not Eligible (Visa Required)
- • Employment or paid work of any kind
- • Enrollment in academic degree programs
- • Stays exceeding 90 consecutive days
- • Journalism or media credential work
- • Immigration or permanent residency intent
- • Diplomatic or official government assignments
Important Travel Conditions
Even with an approved travel authorization, certain conditions must be observed. An ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States — the final admission decision rests with customs and border protection officers at your point of arrival. You must also carry a return or onward ticket and demonstrate that your intended stay falls within the 90-day limit. Travelers who overstay their authorized period risk losing future travel privileges to the United States.
